How to Design Custom Balloon Artwork: A Complete Guide
Getting your artwork right is the single most important step in producing great custom printed balloons. Whether you're supplying ready-made artwork or working with our design team to create something new, understanding the technical requirements will save time and ensure a great result. Here's everything you need to know about designing artwork for custom balloon printing.
File Format Requirements
We accept artwork in the following formats: Adobe Illustrator (AI), EPS, PDF, and PNG at 300 dpi or higher at the intended print size. Vector formats (AI, EPS, PDF with embedded fonts and outlines) are strongly preferred because they scale to any size without losing clarity. Raster files (PNG, JPEG) must be supplied at 300 dpi at the actual print size — a logo that looks fine on screen at 72 dpi will be blurry and pixelated when printed on a balloon.
Colour Mode
Supply your artwork in CMYK colour mode, not RGB. This is because our printing process uses CMYK inks, and colours in RGB mode (which is designed for screens) can shift significantly when converted to CMYK. If you have Pantone (PMS) colours in your brand guidelines, supply those codes separately so we can match them accurately.
Design Considerations for Balloons
Balloons are curved, flexible surfaces — this creates some specific design considerations. Keep important elements (logos, text) in the central two-thirds of the balloon area, as edges and the neck area are difficult to print clearly. Use clean, bold lines — fine hairline details can be lost in printing. Keep text at a minimum size that will read clearly when scaled to the balloon surface. Avoid very complex photographic images, which rarely reproduce well on the uneven surface of an inflated balloon.
Bleed and Safe Zones
For balloon printing, we recommend a safety margin of at least 15mm from the edge of your design to any critical elements. We'll advise on specific bleed and safe zone requirements when you confirm your order, based on the balloon size and printing method being used.
