What Files Do I Need for Custom Balloon Printing?
What Files Do I Need for Custom Balloon Printing?
Supplying the right artwork files is the key to getting great results from your custom balloon printing order. At Clown Balloons, we work with all common graphic design file formats, but there are clear preferences that will give you the best outcome. Here's a definitive guide to artwork file requirements for custom balloon printing in Australia.
Preferred File Formats: Vector Files
Adobe Illustrator (.AI) is our most preferred format. AI files created in Adobe Illustrator preserve vector paths, making it possible to scale your artwork to any balloon size without any loss of quality. EPS (.EPS) is similarly well-suited and broadly compatible. PDF (.PDF) files that contain embedded vector graphics are also excellent. For all vector files, please ensure fonts are converted to outlines or curves before saving to avoid font substitution issues.
Accepted Raster Formats
PNG (.PNG) and JPEG (.JPG) files are accepted, but only at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at the actual intended print size. A file that is 300 dpi at 5cm wide is not 300 dpi at 28cm wide — many clients mistakenly supply files at screen resolution (72 dpi) thinking they are high resolution. Always check the dpi at the final print size, not the original file size.
Colour Mode
Artwork should be supplied in CMYK colour mode. If your file is in RGB (which is standard for screen graphics), colours will need to be converted to CMYK for printing, and this conversion can cause colour shifts — particularly in bright blues, purples, and oranges. For the most accurate colour reproduction, supply CMYK files and include Pantone codes if you have specific brand colour requirements.
Fonts and Text
If your artwork contains text, either convert all fonts to outlines/curves before saving, or supply the original font files alongside your artwork. This prevents font substitution (where our system uses a different font than you intended) and ensures your text appears exactly as designed.
What If I Don't Have These Files?
Many clients come to us with only a low-resolution PNG from a website or a scanned business card. In most cases, our design team can redraw or recreate your logo as a vector file for a small additional fee. Contact us to discuss your specific situation — we'll find a way to get your artwork print-ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the preferred file format for balloon printing artwork?
Adobe Illustrator (.AI) files are preferred, followed by EPS and vector-based PDF. These vector formats scale to any size without quality loss. Raster files (PNG, JPEG) are accepted at 300 dpi minimum at the actual print size.
What resolution do I need for my artwork?
A minimum of 300 dpi at the final printed size on the balloon. This is not the same as 300 dpi at a small file size — make sure your file is 300 dpi when scaled to the balloon's actual print area (approximately 20–30cm for an 11-inch balloon at full inflation).
Does it matter if my file is in RGB or CMYK?
Yes. Supply artwork in CMYK colour mode. RGB files will be converted to CMYK during production, which can cause colour shifts — especially in blues, purples, and vivid oranges. For accurate brand colour reproduction, CMYK is essential.
Should I outline my fonts before sending?
Yes. Convert all fonts to outlines (or curves) before saving and sending your file. This prevents font substitution if we don't have the exact font installed on our systems. Alternatively, include the original font files with your submission.
What if I only have a low-resolution logo?
In many cases, our design team can redraw your logo as a print-ready vector file for a small additional fee. Send us what you have and we'll advise on what's possible and what it would cost to create a print-ready version.
Can I supply multiple designs in one file?
Yes. If you're ordering multiple designs (e.g., different messages on different balloons within the same order), you can supply all designs in a single file clearly labelled. We'll create a separate proof for each design for your approval before printing begins.
